Words from Alpha

An interesting subject that has come up a few times is the recasting of actors from HLTS in HLTR episodes, as different characters.  Although I sympathize with those who have trouble with the suspension of disbelief, I can also sympathize with the creators' dilemma: how to bring back much liked performers whose characters are dead?  I won't say that Charlie DeSalvo had a rabid fan base,  (though I found Philip Akin much more compelling as Simon Clark than as DeSalvo), but I can see why Valentine Pelka just had to reappear.  Who else could make such a heinous character as Kronos the object of fan madness?

Why not just have flashbacks to a life with Kronos?  Well, from a writerly perspective, unless they were going to do the whole thing as a flashback, there would have been no suspense.  There could be no resolution between Amanda and Kronos, since Duncan did the leather lad in, unless of course Amanda and Kronos became best buds or something wacky like that.  But I don't think Kronos was ever Amanda's type.   Another option might have been to bring them back in the style of It's an Immortal Life (aka To Be and Not to Be).  But to do that you have to have a lot of past episodes to draw on, which The Raven hasn't.   I really liked Korda, he would have been much better at a dinner party than Kronos any day;)

THIS MONTH AT THE RFWP
The Red Cross-Highlander Fans project to send aid to Kosovo is still in need of our support.  We have raised almost two thousand dollars now, but we can do better.

The Official Paul Johansson Fan Club has moved to www.pauljohansson.com, along with the other official Johansson sites.  Now no one should have trouble remembering where to find him on the net!

July marked the groundbreaking of the RFWP Gauloise, a selection of pages from the RFWP translated into French.  Translation assistance is sought from our growing francophone membership.  The RFWP RAVE'n WebSite Awards are in full swing.  We have awarded three Ruby Awards and one Sapphire Award  so far, and we seek more nominees.  Check the awards out, it is a great way to get thorough visitor responses to your site.  All awards come with judges' comments attached:)  The RFWP-WB is partially open for visits.  The site is meant to give access to the RFWP for those who have difficulties getting into and around geocities.  There are still a lot of bugs yet to be ironed out, but nothing contagious!

MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Alas, but our member of the month may not be able to read this soon, her computer is kaput!  Watcher Too did not submit a blurb to be member of the month, but I think that she ought to have been in this column a good while ago.  She has done so much for me as the keeper of our database, without which the Pack might have been scattered far and wide on my hard drive!  She "kept me honest" through the final tally of votes for the Immie Awards (I just can't count!) she had the updated list of email addies and info on the Pack when my computer went kaput, and she always got the Newsletter done in style and on time.  Her most visible online accomplishments can be seen in the RFWP Raven WATCH and of course the RFWP Newsletter until  the July edition, at which time RL stepped in and became more greedy for her time than even the Pack can be.

Here's to hoping WatcherToo is back online soon!

RAVEN EPISODE OF THE MONTH

"Was this scripted?"  asks lurks

Love and Death has already made it to Episode of the Month, but I'm going to single it out again.  This marvelously intricate episode certainly stands re-viewing.  It contains some of the best dramatic performances and comic scenes in the show's body of work.  The intensity of Nick and Loren's relationship, next to the light-hearted "what do we do about Bert?" scenes gave the episode a breadth that is hard to find in a mere one hour viewing period.

WHO'S DOIN' WHAT

prophecy_girl "was at the Toronto Trek 13 Star Trek convention in Toronto July 9-11 and one of the workshops was on Raven.
The discussion centered on whether we thought Amanda was a strong enough character to carry the show on her own. A lot of comments were brought up about how in Highlander she was always running to Duncan for protection and now she seems to be "queen of the sword". I went on record on behalf of pack to say that "of course women learn to stand on their own when there's no man around to dump on" besides, Amanda is 1200+ so she must have managed to wield her own sword for a few years without him. Anyhow, it was great to see a Raven forum at the convention and meet with other fans."  Brena Rosal is "going to a poetry convention in Oct to read my poem in front of a judging panel. It's a big event weekend with the same kind of stuff going on at a Highlander con, but more poetry minded.  You could say this has been a dream of mine for the past couple of years. I can pick any poem and have chosen, Choices Of Light. I am very thrilled and just wanted to share. There is also a cash prize from $1,000 to $15,000.  Wow, can you imagine me reading in front of strangers? But that's part of the contest. Also I'll got to meet Dr. Kenneth Fan, the Poet Laureate from China! I'm really hoping to make the right conections with an agent.  Winning would be gravy. Well, make that whipped cream with strawberries! Thank you everyone for encourging me and letting me share this with you." losin'it writes "Wondering about putting a trivia game on my site. Asking how can I do this? Anyone have trouble at geo-yahoo putting fading image applet on their page. I can't get it to work. Can't seem to find the site that they are using. The applet is there but can't find the site were the program is. Tried to e-mail geo-yahoo, no reply. Life is gooooood." Lola writes:"I have exciting news...at least it's exciting to me.  I live in the southwest and the first week in August, I will be visiting New York for the first time. Never in my life have I ventured east of the 4 corners. " kurgan_69 is "going to Scotland in September!! If anyone knows any cheap but good B&B's in Edinburgh, lemme know!!" Shara writes: "This a note to say that I am going back to university to study Classics in September and will have a permenant oneline home in September also." Kate Clan DotD will "be heading to Clan DotD Retreat .August 5-9...for a weekend of Highlander related fun."  Wilusa is "going to New York for the annual Dark Shadows Festival (con) Aug. 21-22. Wonder if any other members dig DS? We have a great fandom.  This con is expected to have 14 actors from the show, plus the stuntman who played the werewolf."  New member Wearwolf "will be joining Dyed-Anne and UNO in Denver for a wedding, river rafting and  late- night misbehavin', the first weekend this month."
