New is great,
but hard to get used to. Take a new computer, faster, smarter, cleaner...
fun! But a fresh start is not all it's cracked up to be. No
bookmarks, no old e-mails, no address book. Oh, sure, there are ways
to transfer the old into the new, but the user has to be highly proficient
in the ways and means of change. Clearly, The Raven suffered from
the clean slate syndrome, because like the new computer with a previously
owned user, a clean slate for a Highlander follow-up is a fiction.
We all carry baggage into the new start, how we pack it is the test of
our true mettle.
I think that our
Wolfe Pack charged ahead into this new territory with the enthusiasm and
optimism that a fresh start deserves, packing our memories of the old quite
efficiently into our appreciation of the new. Sure, if you want a
wide variety of episodes to review, the old version has more, but if you
love the feeling of embarking for an unknown destination, there is no substitute
for the new. However uncertain our show's future is today, we should
revel in the novelty of the outing, and never doubt ourselves for breaking
away from the well-used trail and venturing into the thicket. Without
a foray into the wilderness now and again, a pack will starve, just as
a possum needs to be a little curious to keep rooting out the goodies in
unfamiliar places.
Respectfully, Petshark,

THIS
MONTH AT THE RFWP
Well, got a new
sillery, and the Red Cross-Highlander fans project is still going.
A few members are carrying the message (about the Kosovo project and also
The Raven cause) into the far reaches of cyber-space: mission "Beyond Rysher"
we could call it. The PJ fan club is under way, seemingly with or
without blessings from TPTB. Firinn has designed a snazzy site for
it, among her other cyber-endeavours. We wish her luck on these.
The Howly Ground forum is getting pretty interesting-you Pack members are
really getting into this HTML stuff, aren't you? If you haven't been
visiting lately, by all means go check it out!

SPECIAL REMINDER!!
In May we in the USA celebrate
Memorial Day, a day for remembering our veterans who gave their lives for
their country (May 31st). Also, don't forget that Mother's Day is
celebrated on May 9th. More informally celebrated here is Cinco
de Mayo on (naturally) May 5th, and our Canadian members will be celebrating
Victoria Day on May 24th. |

.MEMBER
OF THE MONTH
introducing
the versatile
Kestrel
Though born in Northern
Utah, a five year stint in Southern California has made me a Californian
at heart. Currently living in North New Jersey with my hubby of 24
years and our 10 year-old adopted Korean son, Nick Sun-Kim, I'm a stay
at home mom, a child chauffeur and plaything for a Jack Russell Terrier.
I received
my Masters of Business Administration from the University of Utah in Salt
Lake City, and have worked in advertising in Denver and property
management in Laguna Niguel. A promotion for hubby brought me to
New Jersey where, "there are foxes and snakes and bears -- Oh my!"
I found Highlander,
The Series, while channel surfing one late afternoon. I saw this
guy who reminded me of Sean Connery, but with Errol Flynn's grin, waving
a sword. I sat down to finish the ep and was hooked. When HLTS
ended, withdrawal and the need to be with others of my obsession, forced
me into using the long-ignored computer. I found the forum and a
whole new "family." I've been with Raven since the beginning and
joined the Wolf Pack after the first two eps.
MEMBER OF THE MONTH is selected

Holiday
Notes from
Scotland:
(contributed by Jette)
We have a few holidays in May.
We don't celebrate the same holidays you do, but sometimes our holidays
and yours overlap or coincide. Mayday, of course, which is an old
holiday. It's a Bank Holiday and applies to the whole of the UK.
There is also the Spring Bank Holiday on the 31st. Again this applies to
the whole of the UK. There is also a local public holiday.
In Edinburgh this is celebrated on the 17th. None of them are very
important, even the stores don't close. Banks and Post Offices do,
some offices, (but not us poor civil servants )
Sunday May 23rd is Whitsunday.
This used to be a church holiday, but I'm afraid I don't know what it commemorates
- it is much more an English holiday than a Scots one. I do know
that lots of old land deeds and other legal documents used to use holidays
like this as milestones for rents, leases and feu duties. (eg. "this lease
shall be held for 999 years from Whitsunday the year of our Lord seventeen
hundred and forty five").
May is when we start to
see some warmer weather (hopefully). An old saying goes "ne'er cast
a clout till the May is out" (never cast off clothing until May is over).
Another interpretation of this is that "the May" refers to the May blossom
of the Hawthorn tree. Hawthorn comes in two varieties, a white blossom,
which comes sometime in April/early May, and a deep pink one that blooms
in May/June. By the time the pink blossom shows you can be confident
that you won't get a sudden snow storm when you're out in shorts and t-shirt!! |
Raven
Awards!!!
(Produced by EmmyZ!!)
Don't forget to
be casting your votes at this link Mister
Poll Raven link after each new episode this month. Just
so that you are aware, you can choose the "Other" option to nominate choices
not shown. After we get the nominations, they'll be tallied and you
Pack Members will have the opportunity to vote on the top choices in each
category. We'll have the final voting after the last first
run episode in May. Then at the end of May we'll be having an awards
party on the forum where the winners will be announced. A name for
the award was suggested by AndiB and SirLab ..... "Immy" which
was decided was the perfect name!
Q#EDITORIAL
MEMORIAL
DAY
While I
was checking for the May holidays to remember, I had to ask for confirmation
about the true intent of Memorial Day. I was referred to Night Owl
and he did some research on it. It's not strictly Raven related,
or even an editorial per se, but I thought it was appropriate for the May
edition since we have so much going on in our lives that sometimes we just
celebrate holidays without truly thinking about what they mean. Here's
what Night Owl sent me. "Before WW II it was Armistice Day, after
WW II it became a day to remember all veterans who have given their lives
in war. But in practice, even before WW II, it became a day to remember
all those who have gone before, so that those who go to cemeteries on Memorial
Day also place flowers on the graves of loved ones who did not serve actively
or perish in war. I do recall a story, dunno whether it was true
or fiction, about a small town that had a graveyard where both union and
rebel soldiers were buried. Don't remember whether it was in the
north or south, but the story spoke of a young woman who one day on the
traditional day for remembering the dead of the civil war, after placing
flowers on the graves of her relatives who had perished in that conflict
shocked her neighbors by going and placing flowers on the graves of the
enemy soldiers who were buried there. When questioned about this
she explained, with tears in her eyes, that they seemed so lonely, buried
so far from their families and friends. Perhaps that was the beginning
of the healing of the United States following the Civil War." Surely
this is the true essence of Memorial Day for all of us, not just Americans-
remembering and caring about all those who lived, loved, and made our lives
possible. |

RAVEN EPISODE
OF THE MONTH
Divorce,
Amanda style. Love and Death was an interesting episode in several
ways. We get to see Amanda's ex-husband, and wasn't he an ex nasty enough
to make all our ex's look pretty darn good in comparison? And Amanda
obviously had a conscience long before Nick came along, she showed that
there were some crimes she wouldn't either participate in or turn a blind
to. This was also an episode many of us were waiting for-finally
Amanda tells Bert about her immortality and what happens? He doesn't
believe her! What a great way to handle this, leaving the door open
for the writers to play with Amanda's relationship with Bert a bit more. |
.WHO'S
DOIN' WHAT
Alice
in Stonyland has been writing like a madwoman as usual. She
got laid off this week (ouch) and has been trying to find a new job. She's
also been helping teach fencing at her salle..... The tragedy in
Colorado hit a little close to home for Brena Rosal's
cousin Steve. He lives in Littleton, Col. He didn't attend the school where
the shooting took place but he had heard of the Trenchcoat Mafia and he
knew some friends that went there. I'm sure our prayers and thoughts
are with all the affected families. Kristine,
our new member from Denmark has created a new Raven
website you've got to go look at. What a beautiful background!
The next time you call the Showcase Theater info number, be sure and listen
to the voice giving the showtimes, you may very well be listening to one
of our own Pack members-Kurgan69 is one of
the announcers! He also does the messages on hold for major companies,
ie. AT&T, Bankboston, Payne/Weber. Kate of Clan
DotD is currently working a Raven fanfic, which will answer
the question 'What happens when Duncan visits Amanda- and meets Nick?'
And I she says inspiration finally struck with the Fantasy novel she's
working on..so she's alternating between the two. Charles
Cooke just published his first web page, http://people.ne.mediaone.net/ccooke/index.html.
He asks that you all keep in mind that it's his first and still a work
in progress. And by the way, he has a picture of himself on the site
for all of us who like to put a face with a name. Plus it has a
very impressive picture of the Air Force Thunderbirds in a tight formation,
among other pictures. From our new member Rebecca
Slaughter - "Well I am watching the beautiful cherry trees bloom
in my small Japanese village! The Japanese have reason to brag --
their cherry blossoms are incredible!!! Wish you were here!" I bet
a lot of us wish we *were* there. Lola
is getting ready for finals - then the lucky little puppy says she's excitedly
taking the summer off! Must be nice, hmmm? She's also just
put together her first Raven webpage - There
Can Be Only One. She says it's not complete but she's having
a good time making pages and learning lots. Jette
reports
that Scotland will have the first elections for the new Scottish parliament
(the first in Scotland in over 200 years) on May 6th. Kai
macwench received notice that she has been accepted into nursing
school. She was the top ranked applicant! She's pretty excited about
it and starts classes in May, finishes LPN courses in Spring of 2000 and
RN courses in Spring of 2001. Hildebryn
just got back from England (a short family trip), and is getting her 'puter
fixed since her scanner is a really big paperweight right now. Georgette
has created five Raven Montage Postcards at her site, Domi-Cile's
Highlander Oasis that you have just got to see and send. Absolutely
wonderful! Losin it added a Raven Gallery
to her Duncan and
Richie's Story Website-check it out, she has some nice screen captures!
Torisen
managed not to get trampled when the Boston marathon ran past and
has been running around Massachusetts looking at ancient geologic
formations. She says she's not looking forward to finals in a few
weeks, but is looking forward to going home for the summer, and also to
Star Wars: Ep. 1 and the "cracker" season finale of The Raven! TheMmortal
has started a new career. The former factory and construction is
now selling new Nissan cars. Nice card, Mmortal! Kirstin
Beall is going happily insane working on about eight different
fanfic projects at once, including a "Doctor Who" -- "Highlander: the Raven"
crossover. For more of MissBeth's wonderful drawings, visit
First
Light Publications, a great site for fantasy lovers where MissBeth
is Art Director. |
